Student Leadership

We are deeply committed to fostering a student leadership culture where every child has the opportunity to take on meaningful roles and have their voice heard. Our aim is to empower pupils to play an active part in shaping school life, bringing purpose, relevance and energy to all that we do at Horbury Primary Academy.

We strive to create numerous opportunities for children to become confident, articulate leaders who can express their views to a range of audiences and apply their leadership skills to real-life situations within our school, our local community, and beyond. By encouraging them to take ownership of their school, we nurture a sense of responsibility and pride, helping them to grow as proactive, thoughtful and engaged individuals.

Our range of student leadership roles are designed to ensure children can make a tangible impact, with their ideas and opinions actively listened to and acted upon. We encourage our pupils to challenge ideas, participate in discussions and debate topics that matter to them, building critical thinking and collaboration skills in the process.

We firmly believe that by empowering children to contribute to the improvement of their school and their learning journey, we are not only enhancing their educational experience but also equipping them to become leaders of the future. Together, we are creating a school community where every child feels valued and inspired to make a difference.

Head Boy and Head Girl

We are pleased to announce our Head Boy and Head Girl for 2024-2025 – Daisy L and Colin B.

Congratulations on your special roles!

School Council

The School Council at Horbury Primary Academy is a team of dedicated, organised and proud children.

The members of the council play a crucial part in the development of our school and each member takes their role very seriously. As a result of their hard work, they have organised and implemented many positive changes within the school.

The selection of the School Council happens at the beginning of each School year. One child from each class in Years 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6 are elected from a number of nominees. This year, the children in school were provided with a voting card detailing the names of three nominees; they could then vote for the candidate that they wished to represent their class.  Once the Council is elected, they vote for their Chair, Vice Chair and Secretary. All School Councillors wear a distinctive school council badge and the team is facilitated by Mrs Wynne and Miss Kilbride.

  • We develop our school and ourselves by discussing ideas and making decisions, whilst respecting the views of everyone
  • We work together, making every effort to ensure our School is the best school possible
  • We aim to make pupils feel included, happy and safe

Pupil voice: We have achieved so much and feel proud to represent the pupil voice for Horbury Primary Academy.

Our School Councillors for the academic year are:

House Captains

At Horbury Primary Academy, we have four house groups – Ash, Beech, Elm and Willow. The houses are led by our Year 6 House Captains.  The House Captains have an important role in school as they help to organise and run whole school events along with Mrs Yarnold and Mrs Cartwright. These events range from Children in Need and Christmas Jumper day to our Summer Sports Day where they will be the spokespeople for their houses.  A key attribute of being an effective House Captain is ensuring a good team spirit at Horbury Primary Academy.  Our House Captains are expected to be an example to younger children, to embody the values and ethos of the school and to contribute to the wider community.

Some of the key responsibilities of our House Captains include:

  • To be a role model in terms of attitude, attendance, behaviour, manners and appearance to all members of the house
  • To liaise with other House Captains and meet regularly with them and with the school leadership team and PE team
  • To help supervise house activities that may include:
    • organising inter–house competitions
    • charity and fund raising events
    • advising and supporting younger pupils
carrying out any other duties as required
  • To wear the house captain’s badge proudly at all times.
