‘Gladiators’ Star Jodie Ounsley Visits

On Friday 28 March we welcomed Jodie Ounsley to our academy, where she spoke to all children in Years 2-6. Jodie stars as Fury on the BBC One revival of the iconic competition show ‘Gladiators’, and is a former rugby union player who played for Premier 15s side Exeter Chiefs Women as a winger. Having been diagnosed with profound deafness as an infant, Jodie was fitted with a cochlear implant at a young age and would go on to become a champion of the deaf community and the world’s first deaf female rugby sevens international.

Dewsbury-born Jodie has recently published her debut book ‘Keep Smashing It: Be Strong, Be Brave, Be Confident’, aimed at helping children and young people to overcome barriers and believe in themselves. Together with sports journalist and author Becky Grey, she spoke to our pupils about her lifelong love of sport, the obstacles she faced on her journey as a trailblazing athlete and her top tips for confidence. The children also took part in interactive activities, talking about their goals and breaking down small steps to achieve them, and had the chance to ask Jodie questions.

The afternoon wrapped up with a book signing, organised by local independent booksellers Darling Reads, where Jodie spent time chatting with each child and signing their books.

Year 5 teacher and English Lead Pauline Williamson, who organised this visit, said: “We are so grateful that Jodie took the time to come and speak to our children – they were incredibly excited to see her!

“Wellbeing, resilience and confidence are important qualities which we try to develop in all our young people. We follow a ‘One Life’ curriculum which focuses on personal development and meeting our students’ holistic needs. We also have our Wellbeing Leaders, who work with adults in school to suggest new initiatives and activities which can improve mental, physical and social wellbeing.

“Jodie is an incredible sportsperson and role model, and her message really aligns with our academy values. I know that every student will have taken something important away from this session.”
